The original instrumental version was recorded by the Yellow Magic Orchestra, for their 1979 album, Solid State Survivor.
Quincy Jones heard Yellow Magic Orchestra's version during the Thriller sessions, and bought it to Michael's attention.

Una de las canciones más extrañas de las grabaciones de "Thriller" es "Behind The Mask".
Quincy Jones, mientras preparaba "Thriller", escuchó la versión original de "Behind The Mask" interpretada por Yellow Magic Orchestra (1979), a Quincy Jones le encantó esta canción y él y Michael trabajaron juntos en ella, añadiendole nuevas letras para su propia versión (que sería un cover).
Jackson escribió nuevas letras a parte de las originales de Ryuichi Sakamoto y Chris Mosdell y grabó su versión durante sus sesiones.
Por razón desconocida la canción nunca vió la luz.
Decidierón dejarsela al teclista de estudio y tours, Greg Phillinganes, grabando su propia versión en su single "Pulse".
Es la que se escucha, decidí añadirla por tener algo que ver con las sesiones de Thriller.
Más tarde el propio Eric Clapton hizo su propia versión del tema en 1986 junto con Phil Collins y otros.
Aparece en el álbum "August".
También el tema ha sido regrabado/remezclado por numerosos grupos como Human League, Senor Coconut, Orbital y otros.
